H.S. BOYS' SOCCER: Kwitonda’s hat tricks helps lead Red Devils to 6-1 win over Pioneers

JEFFERSONVILLE — The Jeffersonville boys’ soccer team scored first-period goals within the span of 10 minutes to take control over host Providence and cruised to a 6-1 win over the Pioneers on senior night.

Junior midfielder Leonard Kwintonda notched a hat trick, adding two second period goals to one in the first frame. Kwintonda’s two second-half goals were a header at 46:16, and a spectacular one-timer off a pass from Jordan Vejar at 58:36 that increased the Red Devil (9-3-2) lead to 6-1.

“They played us so well last year — and tied us on Senior Night — that this one had me a bit worried,” Jeffersonville coach Carson Webb said. “I was nervous because I knew the kind of quality they had and what they were capable of. We gave up a goal late in the first half that changed the momentum a little bit, but we were able to respond.”

Goals from Brian Fischer and Alex Duckworth came within a minute of one another in the first period, and Kwintonda followed with a goal off a pass from Duckworth that was sent past Providence goalkeeper Jeff Wiley at the right net.

The Pioneers (9-5-2) found the scoring column as forward Andrew Wimp notched the equivalent of a buzzer-beater, when his kick off a pass from Pierce Crawley found the net at 39:56 in the first period.

Providence was unable to carry the momentum off Wimp’s goal into the second period. Kwintonda’s header came within the first seven minutes of the second period, and for the remainder of the match, the Pioneers’ defense continued to get tested. Jeffersonville outshot Providence 11-5.

Providence coach Brandon Rogers said in order to counter the speed of attackers like Fischer and Kwintonda, his midfielders needed to step up in Saturday’s matchup and largely were unable to.

“We knew coming in that they were going to have one or two kids who are fast and athletic. That happens every year,” Rogers said. “If we would have been able to keep them from distributing the ball to those guys who are up front, their speed doesn’t mean as much. We’ve got to have that presence in the middle.”

Coming into Saturday’s matchup, the Pioneers had won their last five matches, and Rogers said his squad would try and learn from the loss.

“With a 6-1 loss, it’s obvious we have some things to improve on, and if we want to make some postseason noise, we need to get back to work to fix them,” he said.

Overall, Webb said he was pleased with the win.

“This is the most resilient team I’ve had since I’ve been here,” he said of his three-year tenure. “Right now, they’re focused and they’re on it. They’re doing well.”

Jeffersonville faces Floyd Central on Tuesday. Providence will face Rock Creek that same evening.
