SELLERSBURG —
Silver Creek’s first season as a varsity football program didn’t produce a victory and winless seasons can wreck havoc on a football program.
But according to Dragons’ head coach Mike Donahue, that hasn’t been the case in Sellersburg.
“The summer has gone exceptionally well,” he said. “The fear was coming off an 0-10 season that there wouldn’t be any enthusiasm, and (the players) are extremely motivated.”
The Dragons have had an average of 45 players at its summer conditioning, weightlifting and practice program and Donahue said he expects about 65 players on his varsity roster again in 2012.
“I consider those great numbers, since (the summer program) isn’t required,” Donahue said.
Donahue said he hasn’t implemented anything new for a Dragon offense that allowed nearly 27 points and 340 yards per game and never scored fewer than 18 points in a contest. However, there will be some new wrinkles for a Silver Creek defense that surrendered at least 29 points in every game and at least 40 from eight straight weeks following its opener until its 29-21 sectional loss to Salem.
The Dragons will once again feature an offense centered around running back Layne Taylor, quarterback Brooks Howell and an offensive line that returns all five players, including standout center Jordan Wilson. Donahue said, although Taylor and Howell have split time between other sports this summer, all three have had productive summers and should come back even stronger in 2012.
By the time Howell graduates, he will have spent three seasons behind Wilson at center.
“I think the most important thing I did last year was put sophomores at quarterback and center,” Donahue said.
