Several top area teams to compete at Old Capital

CORYDON — High school golfers from 14 Southern Indiana high schools will gather in Corydon on Saturday to compete in the Corydon Central High School Bud Bennett Memorial Invitational golf tournament, held at Old Capital Golf Club.

Local teams competing include Floyd Central, Providence, Jeffersonville, New Albany, Henryville, Borden and Clarksville. 

Floyd Central is currently ranked third in the IHSGCA poll. The Highlanders won the Spring Preview tournament at The Legends in Franklin on Saturday, a tournament that features several ranked teams on the course that hosts the IHSAA state championship meet. 

Additionally, Floyd Central also won the Ron Veleta Invitational at Wooded View Golf Course on Saturday, with two of the top three finishes going to Highlanders. Jay Holderman’s 77 held up after a three-hole, sudden-death tiebreaker.

Another hot team to watch is the Hornets. Henryville’s Evan Embry recently shot a 30 in nine holes at Hidden Creek in a triangular meet against Lanesville and Charlestown, and is regarded as one of the state’s best golfers. 

This is the 47th year for the tournament. But this year, the name is being changed to honor Bud Bennett, who died February 1.

Bud was a longtime community supporter of Corydon and a businessman who saw the value of competitive golf in boosting the confidence and athleticism of youth. 

“Bud enjoyed golf, and particularly enjoyed seeing youth participate in golf tournaments and even loved to play against young golfers on occasion,” said Mark Wiseman, Chairman of Old Capital Golf Club. “We think of him every day here at Old Capital and his influence on our club and on the community in general. We think it is fitting to change the name of the tournament to honor his work and are happy to have strong participation this year.”

This year, teams from the following high schools plan to participate: Corydon Central, Springs Valley (French Lick/West Baden), North Harrison, Forest Park (Ferdinand), Lanesville and Scottsburg. 

All told, more than 70 golfers will take to the course at Old Capital on Saturday. 

The tournament is set to begin at 2 p.m. and expected to end at about 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend and follow the tournament on foot for free, or rent a cart for a small fee.

Bud Bennett was in the insurance industry for 52 years, was owner and president of Bennett & Bennett Insurance Inc., was a community volunteer and leader in many organizations in Southern Indiana. When a group of 115 investors from Harrison County came together to purchase the club’s operations and save it as a community asset in 2008, he was one of those original investors.

“As a longtime member of our community, he had met with many business leaders working to bring businesses to Harrison County,” Wiseman said. “Those leaders told him, again and again, that having the course here was important to business owners who wanted to ensure there were amenities nearby that would enhance the quality of their lives in Harrison County. It was his support that helped us keep this facility here, and it is fitting to honor him here, in one of his favorite places.”
