SCOTTSBURG —
Scottsburg’s Jillian Romero scored 19 points, including the game winner in the lane in the final seconds as the Warriorettes handed Jeffersonville its third straight loss, 48-47 on Tuesday.
Jeff had a chance to win the game in the end, but failed to get a shot off at the buzzer.
“Credit to Scottsburg. They defended very well at the end,” Jeff coach Matt Pait said. “The difference in the game for us ended up being on the defensive end. We couldn’t get stops when we needed them. Romero hit some big shots in the fourth quarter. We did not contain their penetration like we needed to on defense and kept letting them drive to the lane, which got them a lot of easy buckets and free throws.”
Scottsburg, which went 11-of-15 from the foul line, took a 14-4 lead at the end of one quarter. However, the Red Devils outscored the Warriorettes 17-5 in the second quarter to take a 21-19 lead into intermission.
The Red Devils continued to expand their lead in the third, taking a 34-30 lead into the final period.
“I am proud of the effort we had after the first quarter and we executed very well on the offensive end,” Pait said.
Once again, Haley Vogen led the Red Devils on the offensive end with 19 points. Vogen is averaging more than 20 points per game in her last three outings.
Nycia Ford added eight points for Jeff, which has dropped eight of its last nine heading into its regular-season finale against Providence on Jan. 31.
“I am proud of my team,” Pait said. “Although things haven't gone our way this year, we continue to fight and get better, and all of this experience in these close games will help us come tournament time.”
