> SOUTHERN INDIANA — The Silver Creek volleyball team won its Mid-Southern Conference opener on Tuesday with a 25-19, 24-26, 25-15, 25-17 victory over visiting Scottsburg.

Junior Hannah Smith led the Dragon hitters with 17 kills, while teammate Kim Jamros spiked 11.

Senior setter Danielle Ramser dished out 22 assists, while sophomore Alex Carlton made 11 digs and five service aces for Silver Creek, which improved to 5-1 with the victory.

Several of the Dragons’ younger players saw some significant playing time on Tuesday as two of Silver Creek’s top frontline players were out with injuries. Junior Haley Garr is battling a shoulder ailment, while senior Kristyn Maymon is recovering from a sprained ankle.

“We’ve got a bunch of new players in right now with Garr and Maymon out,” Dragons’ head coach Jeff Zimmerman said. “We’re going to have to get better quick. We need to get healthy, but we had some players come off the bench and step up.”

Class 3A No. 10 Silver Creek will visit Lanesville on Thursday.

• Borden picks up first win: After struggling early in the season, Borden earned its first victory in five sets over North Harrison on Tuesday.

The Braves dropped the first two sets — 24-26 and 19-25 — before winning the final three, 25-18, 25-18, and 15-11.

“This was a total team victory,” Borden coach D.J. Zipp said. “We never gave up and kept playing as hard as we could. I am proud of the way this team performed tonight.”

Allison Rademacher led Borden with 12 kills and four aces. Brandi Peed added seven kills and four aces. Erika Frascella, filling in for two injured setters, had 16 assists and 10 digs for the Braves.

Zipp also complimented his back-line receivers.

“Rachel Kirchgessner and the rest of our backrow did a phenominal job, as did our blockers,” Zipp praised. “Defense won the match for us and that is nice to see.”

• Generals fall at home: Host Clarksville lost to MSC rival Pekin Eastern, 25-10, 25-13, 25-7. The Generals will go to Borden on Thursday.



BOYS’ TENNIS

• Generals breeze past Henryville: One day after getting swept by Austin, Clarksville did some sweeping of its own in a 5-0 triumph at Henryville.

The Generals’ top two singles players each prevailed in three sets. At No. 1 singles, Jeremy Noe battled leg cramps to beat the Hornets’ Evan Embry in a match that lasted two-and-a-half hours, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

Clarksville’s Austin Johnson outlasted Brad Everage at two singles, 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-2. The Generals won No. 3 singles by default.

In doubles action, Clarksville’s Alex Stepp and Matt Denton won at the No. 1 spot. Winning at two doubles for the Generals (2-1) were Alex Johnson and Jonathan Paris.

“I felt the whole team played well today. The singles players hung tough and gutted out wins, especially Jeremy Noe,” Clarksville coach Steve Welcher said. “Our doubles teams bounced back very well from (Monday’s) defeat. I hope we can continue to build and get better each match.”

The Generals visit Pekin Eastern today.

• Doubles tandems help Borden beat Salem: Host Borden won both doubles matches and defeated Salem, 3-2.

At No. 1 doubles, the Braves’ tandem of Matt Smith and Jared Sanders upended Christian Gleason and Brody Lyles, 6-3, 6-2. Borden’s Clint Morris and Josh Volstedt prevailed at two doubles over Nick Medlock and Rylie Smith, 6-4, 6-2.

Borden’s other point came at No. 3 singles. Senior Kyle Craig cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Salem’s Chris Journell.

“I am pleased with our results,” first-year Braves coach Fin Burton said. “I would like to see a little more consistency from our players. As a coach, you would like to see a few more balls kept in play, a few better returns and finishing volleys. I’m confident the players will get there. After our freshman Josh Volstedt calmed down in two doubles, he started to play like the player I have expected him to be. I certainly hope he can keep it up.”

Borden will host Southern Athletic Conference rival Lanesville on Thursday.



GIRLS’ SOCCER

• Bulldogs thump North Harrison: Kelsey Graeter scored four goals to lead the New Albany girls’ soccer team to a 10-0 road victory over North Harrison on Tuesday.

Teammate Kamaren Cole connected on three goals, while the Bulldogs’ Danielle Hutchinson, Miranda Duffy and Laura Mills each kicked in a score.

Mills and Stephanie Cotner each recorded an assist.

The Bulldogs will return home on Thursday when they take on Bloomington South.

• Pioneers improve to 3-1: Visiting Providence outshot Forest Park on goal 8-0 and won 2-0.

The Pioneers’ Erin Duncan recorded the match’s first goal, which was unassisted at the 18th minute of the first half. Teammate Leah Mattingly then knocked in Providence’s second score on a free kick with 18 minutes left in the contest.

The Pioneers (3-1) will travel to Jeffersonville on Thursday.

• Dragons defeat Butler: Three Silver Creek players each scored a goal and the Dragons benefitted from an own goal by Louisville Butler in a 4-1 victory.

Kicking in goals for the Dragons were Olivia Fitchett, Tiphany Harper and Haley Turner. Teammate Deziree Cook dished out two assists.

Silver Creek will visit Jeffersonville on Thursday, Sept. 2.



CROSS COUNTRY

• Jeff tandem 10th at Hokum Karem: Jeffersonville girls’ runners Connie Chan and Fariel Abrego teamed up to finish 10th in the Clarksville Hokum Karem at Community Park in New Albany. Chan and Abrego’s time was 42:25.

The Red Devils’ No. 2 tandem of Jade Evans and Maddie Gavin finished 38th in  51:03.

“Connie and Fariel have been great leaders for this team and continue to help pace this team,” Jeff girls’ coach Amy Austin said. “We have a good mix of veterans and newcomers, so as the season progresses we will continue to improve with our times and finishes. Once we close the gap between some of our runners, we will push for the top teams.”

No team scores were reported at press time. The Red Devils will run in the Charlestown Invitational on Thursday.



GIRLS’ GOLF

• Dragons down Clarksville: Silver Creek fired a 174 to win a dual match with host Clarksville at Wooded View Golf Course. The Generals fielded an incomplete team.

Megan Bowyer paced the Dragons with a 37, collecting medalist honors. Junior Kimi Fluhr chipped in a 45, while Silver Creek teammates Ashleigh Bowyer and Kameron Salings each carded a 46.

Clarksville’s Kelsey Hall and Aerial Oehler both shot a 63. The Dragons will travel to Hoosier Hills Golf Course in Borden on Thursday to face New Albany and Pekin Eastern. The Generals also will return to action Thursday when it plays Trinity Lutheran at Seymour Country Club.

• Warriors continue win streak: Christian Academy of Indiana extended its winning streak to four matches with a 201-221 victory over Crawford County at Hidden Creek Golf Club.

Warrior sophomore Sydney Shrebtienko earned medalist honors for the fifth time this season, firing a 40. Teammates Kendra Driver and Taylor Jones each shot a 51, and Karlie Byrd added a 59.

CAI will return to Hidden Creek on Thursday when it faces Borden and Charlestown.
