Floyd Central pays back Scottsburg in overtime, 75-73

FLOYDS KNOBS — What a difference a year makes.

After getting drilled by 24 points at Scottsburg last season, the Floyd Central girls’ basketball team gutted out a home overtime victory, 75-73 over the visiting Warriorettes on Thursday night at Highlander Gymnasium.

Niki Bruno powered the Highlanders (1-1) down the stretch, as the senior scored 13 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter and overtime — including the game-winning basket with six seconds left in the extra period.

“We talked about [Scottsburg’s Katie] Wampler having four fouls and she really had to take it at her,” Floyd Central coach Kirk Hamsley said. “We did a good job of getting it to her [Bruno] the first six minutes of the fourth and then we decided she wasn’t on the floor I guess and started shooting a bunch of 3’s randomly.”

Floyd led by as many as 13 points in the first half, trailed by four in overtime, and committed 36 turnovers but somehow found a way to win its first game of the season.

“We lost it, won it, lost it, won it, lost it, won it. Wow,” Hamsley said. “Then they had a good shot and luckily missed it. I thought it was going in when she released it.”

The hosts started red hot as a Tori Kingsley bucket put the Highlanders up 10-2 at the 4:57 mark of the first period. Abbie Engle converted a 3-point play and another Kingsley basket in the final seconds of the first put Floyd up 23-10 at the first stop.

Class 3A No. 9 Scottsburg (1-1) slowly chipped away at the Floyd lead in the second frame and closed within 29-27 at intermission. The visitors hit 13-of-14 first-half free throws, while the Highlanders shot just 1-of-8 in the second quarter.

“At halftime, we talked about taking away their dribble drive and get the ball to the post,” Hamsley said. “We get a little bit of a lead and we think the game’s over and we play soft. We need to grow up from that. They [Scottsburg] did some nice things to get back in the game.”

The Highlanders pushed their lead to 51-40 with 1:02 left in the third period as Kingsley and Madison Kaiser combined for 13 points in the stanza. Scottsburg again battled back and tied the game at 64 with 1:31 left in regulation.

The barnburner of a game went to overtime tied at 66, and the Warrioriettes quickly grabbed a 70-66 in the extra frame.

But Floyd finished off its home win with a 9-3 game-ending run and defeated Scottsburg for the first time since Nov. 19, 2009.

Floyd’s next game will be Tuesday at home against Seymour. It will be the Highlanders’ Hoosier Hills Conference opener.
