FLOYDS KNOBS —
The Floyd Central baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at two and then added a run in the bottom of the 10th to defeat Class 2A No. 3 Northfield on Friday at Highlander Field, 3-2.
The Highlanders’ two runs in the seventh came with two out. Jacob Snodgrass pulled Floyd Central (3-1) to within one run with an RBI single. Shortly thereafter, the Highlanders plated another run to deadlock the game at two and send it to extra innings.
In the bottom of the 10th with two out, Cody Sunderhaus collected a game-winning RBI single.
Derek Despain led the Floyd Central sticks with three hits. Snodgrass, Sunderhaus, Garrett Shanks and Reed Padgett each had a pair of knocks for the Highlanders.
Kyle Sipes was the winning pitcher in relief. The Floyd Central hurler pitched the final three innings, allowing no runs on no hits and one walk. Sipes struck out four.
“It was a good win,” Highlanders’ head coach Casey LaDuke said. “It’s nice to see the kids battle back and hang on for a win.”
Floyd Central travels to Columbus East today to play two Hoosier Hills Conference rivals. The Highlanders face the host Olympians and Madison.
SOFTBALL
• Dragons rally in seventh to beat Southwestern: With two out in the bottom of the seventh, Casie Toby drilled a two-run double down the right-field line to give host Silver Creek a 5-4 win over Southwestern.
Toby wound up going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Teammate Tiphany Harper was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.
Dragons’ pitcher Shayla Cravens earned the victory in relief. She pitched a scoreless top of the seventh, allowing one hit.
“It was a good win for us,” Silver Creek assistant coach Terry Purlee said. “The kids played really well. We’re still young, but we step up in key situations.”
The Dragons (3-1) host Madison today.
• Errror-prone Devils fall: Jeffersonville committed nine errors on its way to an 8-3 loss to visiting Jennings County.
“We left a lot of runners in scoring position and committed too many errors,” Jeff coach Jodi Bradley said. “But it’s the beginning of the season. We have an inexperienced team and we are continuing to get better every day.”
Jeffersonville allowed Jennings County to score in each of the first three innings, and a four-inning fifth put the Red Devils away for good.
Other details, including team records, were not available at press time.
Jeffersonville hosts Seymour today.
BOYS’ GOLF
• Floyd wins triangular meet: On Thursday, Floyd Central shot a 151 to win a triangular meet at Old English Golf Course in English. Crawford County finished second with a 175, followed by Lanesville with a 191.
The Highlanders’ Devin Jenkins earned medalist honors with a 37. Floyd Central’s Daniel Shepard, Alex Beyer and Austin Peckham each carded a 38. Also for the Highlanders, Jay Holderman shot a 40 and Jack Sparrow had a 41.
Floyd Central will split up and play two golf tournaments today. One Highlander team competes in the Hall of Fame Tournament in Peru, while the other Floyd Central squad will host the Floyd Central Invitational at Valley View Golf Club in Floyds Knobs.
