JEFFERSONVILLE — The Jeffersonville girls’ tennis team got a win over sectional rival Providence on Monday at the Ralph Scales Sports Complex, 4-1. 

“Even though it was 4-1, it was not quite like an easy 4-1 victory,” Jeff coach Mark Reilly said. “They’re definitely a competitive team and one of the top four in the area. It was a good win.”

Providence coach Vince DiNoto was happy with the way his team played, despite his team taking its first loss of the season. 

“I felt real good with where we were at, since we were without ... No. 2 singles player (Maggie Bremmer) today, a senior player for me,” DiNoto said. “So I played three girls who — they’ve played this year, but they did not play for me last year. One of them wasn’t even on the team last year.”

The Pioneers’ Alison Primavera spelled Bremmer at the No. 2 spot, where Jeff’s Julianna Jenks won a 6-1, 6-0 match. 

“She held her own,” DiNoto said. “She was first off the court, but it wasn’t like she got wiped off the court. It was a competitive match, and the score may not show it was as competitive as it was.” 

Because of occasionally high winds, Jeff No. 1 singles player Morgan Reilly was forced to adjust her game a bit, but was still able to get a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Providence’s Jacqueline Hollkamp. 

“I think Jacqueline came out today and did a really good job with the wind and building hitter’s shots, and Morgan was missing the cue a little bit,” Reilly said. “So we just had to tighten the target areas and bring it a little bit from the lines and then cut back on the unforced errors, and that helped.”

Jeffersonville finished off the singles sweep with a victory by Larissa Neville at the No. 3 spot, who fended off Abbie Shelton, 6-2, 6-4. 

“Larissa, she’s just Miss Consistent there at the No. 3 spot and didn’t make a lot of mistakes,” Reilly said. “So every singles player, even though we won, they each had their own thing they were doing and I thought they did a good job.”

Jeffersonville got another point at No. 2 doubles, where the team of Rachel Williams and Kaitlin Wunsch downed Providence’s Kristin Simms and Sarah Federspiel, 6-4, 6-3. 

The longest match of the afternoon was also its hardest-fought battle, where Providence picked up the victory at No. 1 doubles. Megan Jakoby and Kelsey Haas outlasted the Red Devils’ Macy Lancaster and Emily Lewis, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. 

DiNoto praised his team’s resilience. 

“They came back and won the first set after being down. ... They lost the second set and then came back being down near the end, 5-4, and came back and won 7-5,” DiNoto said. “So I’m very impressed. They’re doing what I expect them to do. They’re a junior and a senior, and they’re real leadership for my team.”

DiNoto said he expects to make some adjustments as the season progresses, but is sure the team will improve. 

“This team will get better every day. It’s very simple,” DiNoto said. “They’re going to get better they come out on the court and practice.”

“They are in our sectional, and I know they were missing their No. 2 player,” Reilly said. “So again, just a solid team. We definitely don’t want to look past them in our sectional at all. They’re going to be somebody that we’ve got to compete against.”  

The Red Devils will host the Jeff Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Providence hosts Paoli today at Community Park in New Albany.
