H.S. FOOTBALL: Bulldogs beat Jennings County 42-13 for second victory of the season

NORTH VERNON — New Albany had the ball for 11 plays in the first half. The Bulldogs averaged 12 yards per rush and scored 28 points en route to a 42-13 win over Jennings County on Friday.

The win was the second in 2012 for the Bulldogs following a 1-9 campaign a year ago.

“These kids went through a lot last year. It’s nice that they can finally enjoy all the hard work and effort they put in,” New Albany second-year coach Charlie Fields said.

Michael Diehl, who rushed for 59 yards and threw for another 43, had a touchdown pass to Keaton Stout and a TD run in the first quarter.

In the second, Tuwan Payton had his first of three touchdown runs before Jennings County got on the board to cut it to 21-7. Marquill Hastings answered with a 66-yard kickoff return.

Hastings’ return wasn’t all that the Bulldogs’ special teams accomplished. Fields said they put the New Albany offense and defense in position to succeed all night.

“It was a close game for a while. Jennings County had an outstanding game plan and gave us some trouble, but our special teams broke it open,” Fields said. “They set up everything.”

Payton finished with 113 yards on 10 carries and had scoring runs of 7, 13 and 58 yards.

The Bulldogs host 0-3 Bedford North Lawrence — a 41-26 loser to Jeffersonville — next Friday.
