H.S. ROUNDUP: Silver Creek hands Eastern first loss

Dragons down Class 2A No. 2 Musketeers, 53-40

SELLERSBURG — The Silver Creek girls’ basketball team is now tied for first place in the Mid-Southern Conference after handing Class 2A No. 2 Eastern its first loss of the season at home on Saturday. The Dragons won 53-40.

“We did a good job defensively,” Silver Creek coach Scott Schoen said. “I can’t speak highly enough of our defensive effort. It was probably by far our best defensive effort in two years.”

Kira Jamros and Carissa Brown combined to stop Jocelyn Mousty from hurting them too badly, holding the Ball State commitment to just 10 points and three field goals.

“It was a total team effort,”  Schoen said.

That may have been true on defense. But on offense, the star of the game was Silver Creek’s Emily Clayton, who poured in a game-high 32 points in a break-out performance.

“She’s been due to have that break-out game. She played very well. I told her today that she’s becoming that complete basketball player — not just driving to the basket or shooting 3s, but her mid-range game is getting so much better,” Schoen said. “But she works at it. She’s one of those players. She’s the first one in the gym, she’s the last one to leave, and I think she’s starting to see that pay off. She stepped up in a big game and had a big offensive night for us, which we needed.”

Silver Creek (14-2, 7-1 MSC) will travel to South Central on Wednesday. The Dragons can clinch a share of the MSC crown next Saturday at home if they defeat Scottsburg.

Also for the Highlanders, freshman Madison Kaiser tallied 12 points, sophomore Brooke Hinton had nine points, junior Nikki Bruno collected nine rebounds and seven points and senior Kelsey Smith dished out five assists.

“We started off well,” Floyd Central head coach Kirk Hamsley said. “We wanted to take (Corydon’s Marie) Rothrock out of the game. We pushed the ball well today. Kingsley came off the bench with 15 points and nine rebounds, which was huge for us.”

The Highlanders will host Jennings County on Tuesday.
