Borden holds New Wash to 21 percent shooting to capture second Class A sectional title in a row, 45-34

BORDEN — The Borden girls’ basketball team has won with defense all season and Saturday night was no different.

The Braves held New Washington to 21 percent shooting and won their second straight sectional championship 45-34 over the Mustangs in the Class A Borden Sectional final.

“We’ve done that an awful lot to a lot of teams,” Borden head coach Terry Rademacher said of his team’s defensive effort. “A lot of it is we try to get teams to shoot shots that aren’t good for them. Our key is we have to rebound those misses, and when we do that we play much better.”

The Braves (17-6), who claimed their 10th sectional crown, grabbed control of the title game from the onset. Borden forced six turnovers and held New Washington to just 1-of-7 shooting in the opening period.

Borden’s Erin Mikel, who led all scorers with 21 points, capped the first quarter with a three-point play with two seconds left as the sectional hosts led 12-2 at the end of one.

“The first period we were really out of sync on both ends of the court,” Mustangs assistant coach Kirsti Holloway said. “We wanted to give them a different look defensively and were out of sync with that. Our shots weren’t falling and we didn’t get second chances.”

Borden, which has now won seven straight games, held New Washington to just two field goals in the game’s first 12 minutes. New Washington’s Courtney Amick kept her team within striking distance by scoring seven of her nine points in the second frame, as the Mustangs trailed 22-12 at intermission.

“Our focus is always to rebound their missed shots that we thought we could get them to miss,” Rademacher said. “In the first quarter, we did a good job of that. But I think six of their 12 points were on offensive putbacks that came in the second quarter.”

The Mustangs’ Kriston Sarver and Ashley Johnson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to open the second half to pull their team within 24-18 at the 6:40 mark of the third quarter. Borden responded as Mikel would go on to score eight in the third stanza, and the sectional host pushed its lead to 37-26 after three quarters.

“She has been an outstanding player for four years, and hopefully she’s got a couple of more weeks to be an outstanding basketball player,” Rademacher said of Mikel. “She’s very intelligent on the court and she’s one of the best in Southern Indiana.”

New Washington (13-9) put together one last run as a Caroline Ricks bucket pulled the Mustangs within 41-34 with 2:09 left in regulation. That would be as close as New Washington would get however, as it fell to Borden for the second time this season.

“It seemed like we didn’t feel urgency out there until late,” Holloway said. “We needed to have that sense of urgency for all 32 minutes. I didn’t feel like we were getting many second chances, especially in the first half. We didn’t crash the boards like we should have.”

Borden will play in the second semifinal of the Class A West Washington Regional at about noon next Saturday versus Class A No. 2 Barr-Reeve (22-0).
