Grenadiers win pool despite loss

IU Southeast suffered its first loss in the NAIA Softball National Championship tournament on Saturday in Gulf Shores, Ala., losing to Lindsey Wilson in Pool E play in five innings 10-0.

Despite the loss, the Grenadiers (34-18) won Pool E with a 2-1 record and will start play in the double-elimination round of the tournament at 11 a.m. EDT on Monday.

Against Lindsey Wilson, IU Southeast managed only two hits against Blue Raider pitchers Jordan Hood and Cara Law. The Grenadiers’ Allie Alford and Nicole Mills each had a single.

IU Southeast starting pitcher Jenna Swain lasted only one inning, as she suffered the loss. Swain gave up four runs (three earned) on one hit and three walks in the top of the first inning.

On Friday, the Grenadiers defeated 12th-ranked Union (Tenn.) in their second pool-play game, 3-0.

IU Southeast senior pitcher Kayla Duke tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out five and walking three. Duke had a no-hitter through five innings, as she improved her record to 16-6.

Duke helped herself at the plate, going 2-for-3. Mills went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
