MARENGO —
The Providence softball team trounced Eastern in the semifinals to advance to the finals of the Class 2A Crawford County Sectional on Tuesday, 11-0.
“With the sticks, we did well,” Providence coach Sean Payne said. “It was awesome to see, going into the finals on Thursday.”
The Pioneers needed just six innings to get it done, thanks to strong offense and good pitching from Sierra Collett.
“Surprisingly, Sierra wasn’t her normal pitching self,” Payne said. “She was working high a lot tonight. But she made really good pitches when she needed to and then had the defense back her up for most of the game.”
Providence committed two errors, but the Pioneer defense was able to quickly erase the unearned baserunners.
For Providence, Morgan Boone, Jordyn Stengel and Lillian Hughes each had two base hits in the contest.
Providence will face Paoli in the sectional finals at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Crawford County.
HENRYVILLE-PAOLI
Henryville’s defense coughed up seven errors in a 9-2 loss in the semifinals of the Class 2A Crawford County Sectional on Tuesday.
“When your errors are greater than your hits, that’s a problem and it’s been a problem all year,” Henryville coach Jenny Schroeder said. “We can’t compete if our defense doesn’t come to play. It’s a shame for Natalie Basham and Sarah Richey — these girls that have worked hard for four years.”
Basham took the loss for the Hornets, striking out one and walking one. Only four of the nine Paoli runs were earned.
Henryville (14-13) says farewell to Richey and Basham, who graduate this year.
SILVER CREEK-NORTH HARRISON
Silver Creek blew a 3-0 lead when Class 3A No. 5 North Harrison tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning and lost in eight innings in the first round of the Class 3A North Harrison Sectional on Tuesday, 4-3.
Shayla Cravens pitched six innings of shutout ball, but left the game in the seventh when the Lady Cats started seizing the momentum. Dragons’ relief pitcher Mackenzie Bush had about the same amount of luck slowing down the sectional hosts and took the loss.
North Harrison got the win with a single after taking advantage of two walks and a hit to juice the bases.
The Dragons got two hits apiece from Brooke Barnett and Heather Knight in the loss.
Silver Creek (19-10) says goodbye to seniors Kelsey Sierota and Tiphany Harper, and will return four juniors to the squad next season.
“They’ve had a phenomenal year all year long,” Silver Creek coach Dave Harvey said. “It’s very sad for us to end their season like this.”
Charlestown defeated Scottsburg 9-0 in the other first-round game at North Harrison on Tuesday. No details of the game were reported at press time.
