JEFFERSONVILLE —
Two squads of wrestlers from Southern Indiana and Louisville clashed at Johnson Arena in the first-ever Battle of the Bridge, an All-Star showcase of Kentuckiana wrestling talent on Wednesday.
In the end, it was the Indiana A squad that took the meet. But all of the wrestlers at the event benefited by just taking part, because a bio of each participant will be sent to every college in the country, Team Jeff coach Danny Struck said.
“I hope this event continues to grow over the years,” Struck said. “ I hope it inspires wrestlers to be better, and attracts colleges to recruit kids from our area. I want it to foster a positive atmosphere between all Louisville metropolitan schools and kids. If we all strive to make each other better, in turn we will get better.”
The meet featured 15 state qualifiers from the Kentucky side — including three-time state champion John Fahy of Trinity and three other state runner ups — taking on the nine sectional champions and three state qualifiers from the Jeffersonville Sectional.
The Indiana A team — comprised almost exclusively of Jeffersonville wrestlers — handled Kentucky’s B team, but had a close one against the better Kentucky A squad, edging out a 36-30 victory. For Indiana, Alonzo Shepherd took a pinfall victory in the 112 weight class, as did Renaldo Weekley at 145 and Brandon Marlin at 160.
Weekley took the most outstanding wrestler award for Indiana, and John Fahy of Trinity won the award on the Kentucky side. Weekly also had two pinfalls in the event, one coming in just 11 seconds.
“Our kids loved it,” Kentucky team leader Tim Harbison of Dupont Manual said. “This will only get bigger each year, and it was neat to see different schools from both sides of the river interacting.”
Lindsey Wilson College and Campbellsville College were both on hand to watch the event.
