RUSHVILLE — Chris Whitehead’s Indiana Junior All-Star team beat Donnie Hale’s senior team, 92-78 in an exhibition game at Rushville High School on Wednesday.
Hale had the better individual performance with 15 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots. Hale hit 6 of 11 field goals and 5 of 6 free throws. He received two of his two free throw attempts on a hard foul from Whitehead.
Later, the two collided in mid-air with Whitehead getting the worst of it, coming down on his neck and head. However, the junior continued and later scored four straight points for the juniors. Whitehead finished with seven points for the juniors, who led 46-37 at the half. He also had an assist and two steals.
Jeffersonville junior Evan Maschmeyer hit one of two junior 3-point field goals in the first half and had three points for the contest. Jeffersonville senior Kegan Clark twisted his ankle in Monday’s seniors’ 125-89 win over the juniors on Monday and didn’t play Wednesday. He expects to be ready for this weekend’s Indiana-Kentucky series, which will be played at Bellarmine on Friday and Indianapolis’ Conseco Fieldhouse on Saturday.
Pike’s Marquis Teague — a Kentucky recruit — led the junior team with 15 points and five assists. Mr. Basketball DeShaun Thomas – an Ohio State recruit from Fort Wayne Luers – had 15 points and nine rebounds.
VOELKER LEADS JUNIOR GIRLS
Under Floyd Central coach Joe Voelker, the junior Indiana All-Stars swept the seniors with an 84-76 overtime win on Wednesday. The juniors outscored the seniors by 16 points in the last 11/2 minutes and overtime, including 16-8 in the extra period.
“It was a real neat experience,” Voelker said. “What made it so good is that we had great kids. They all accepted their roles, played hard and played well together.
“There are some very good players and leaders in the junior class. They are some great athletes.”
Ben Davis junior Bria Goss led the juniors with 21 points, four assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Goss was the difference, Voelker said.
“We had Bria Goss and they didn’t,” he said.
Heritage Christian’s Liz Stratman added 15 points, eight rebounds and 11 blocked shots for the juniors. The seniors were led by Miss Basketball Courtney Moses of Oak Hill. She had 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
