Marcum, Nixon injured in Bulldogs’ 57-41 defeat

NEW ALBANY — The New Albany girls’ basketball squad dropped a 57-41 contest to visiting Evansville Bosse on Saturday afternoon at The Doghouse, but a more immediate concern might be the team’s other losses that came from the game.

At the close of the contest, New Albany senior guard Tanner Marcum — the reigning News and Tribune Player of the Year — and sophomore forward Brianne Nixon for the Bulldogs were receiving triage on the sidelines following injuries that occurred during the game.

Nixon, who finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, suffered what appeared to be a right knee injury during a collision with a Bosse player midway through the fourth quarter. Marcum, who led New Albany with 21 points, sustained a left ankle injury following a drive to the basket and score with 2:03 remaining in the contest.

With the injuries so fresh, it was difficult to tell whether or not the two players would be available for New Albany’s regular-season finale against New Washington at The Doghouse on Tuesday — or beyond.

“I try to stay optimistic,” New Albany coach Tammy Geron said. “I know both of these kids. They’re two of our three captains. They’re gamers — I’m not worried about them battling through some pain. My worry is about how serious these injuries are for them and for us. Obviously, we want them out on the floor with us.”

Geron said she was pleased with how the Bulldogs (9-10) competed against Bosse (14-6), with two exceptions. The Evansville Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-0 lead over the first 3 minutes and 4 seconds of the contest, and New Albany played from behind for the vast majority of it.

Following two free throws from Marcum, New Albany took its first and only lead with 3:52 remaining in the third quarter, but an ensuing 3-pointer from Jasmine Washington gave Bosse the lead right back and the visitors never trailed again.

Marcum nailed a long 2-point jumper with a little more than four minutes remaining in the contest to narrow the gap to 46-39, but New Albany was outscored 11-2 over the rest of the contest.

Geron said her squad lost its focus due to Bosse’s fierce play and the injuries, but she felt they also simply quit competing.

“Tanner makes us go, and Bri is our leader on the boards and inside,” she said. “You know, we’re just going to have to drive through a wall right now. This late in the season, we’re going to have to deal with some adversity and play through this.”

Janisha Lindsey led Bosse with 25 points, and Washington added 15.
