Spring Street entrance added to Glossbrenner Garden

City Pride working with Steel Dynamics on the project

JEFFERSONVILLE — Glossbrenner Public Garden is looking to attract a little more attention.

The public garden has long been a peaceful oasis in Jeffersonville’s downtown historic district, but it may be underutilized as some don’t know it exists and is open to the public.

“Many people don’t know that it’s there,” said Jeffersonville City Pride Co-chair Peggy Duffy.

She said the organization is working with Jeffersonville-based Steel Dynamics to create another entrance on Spring Street for the small public garden to draw more attention to the space. There is another entrance to the garden on Chestnut Street.

In addition to creating a second entrance, plans are to beautify the landscaping in the garden, possibly add decorative toppers to the new entrance, an arch or a gate.

Diana Maynard, with Steel Dynamics, said the community service project will probably be completed in a couple of weeks.

Duffy said it is the fourth time City Pride and Steel Dynamics have partnered up to work on a community service project this year.

“They are great to work with,” she said. “[Steel Dynamics] has been a fantastic community partner.”

City pride and Indiana Landmarks are still in discussions with the city to transfer the deed of the public garden to Jeffersonville. The issue is likely to be presented at an Indiana landmarks meeting in December.

“It really won’t change anything,” Duffy said, referring to the upkeep of the garden.

She added that City Pride is looking to add lights to the small garden for the holiday season.
