FLOYD COUNTY —
An afternoon fire destroyed a home at 2058 Two Mile Lane in Floyd County on Wednesday.
New Chapel firefighters were called to the scene around 3:30 p.m., and when they arrived the home was already engulfed in flames.
Homeowner Billy Fulkerson and his two children were not home when the fire broke out. Fulkerson, who owns a tattoo parlor along Main Street in New Albany, said a friend called him and told him about the fire.
“He told me he drove past my house and saw a sheriff’s car in the driveway and smoke coming out of the house,” Fulkerson said.
While no one was home, he said four guinea pigs and a fish were all lost in the fire and his dog ran off into the nearby woods when firefighters arrived.
Fulkerson said he didn’t care about the loss of his television or PlayStation, but what bothered him were the sentimental items that were destroyed — like the pair of shoes he walked miles in to lose 157 pounds and his father’s remote control planes.
He lived at the residence for 14 years.
The cause is under investigation according to New Chapel Fire Chief Jamey Noel. However, he said two kerosene heaters were left on inside the home, which may be to blame.
“It’s a good reminder to never leave portable heaters unattended,” he said.
The structure also posed problems for firefighters by the way it was constructed. Noel said the home was first a trailer that was later framed into a home.
“It had a partial home built around it. It made for a tough time for us,” he said.
