NEW ALBANY —
Rexann Farris was sworn in Monday as chief probation officer of the newly unified Floyd County Probation Office.
A new Indiana law required counties with multiple probation offices to consolidate by Jan. 1. The Floyd County Adult, Misdemeanor and Juvenile Probation Departments are now one department with three divisions. Clark County went through a similar process this month.
“Our policies and procedures will all be consolidated,” Farris said.
The change is meant to streamline administrative services, ensure collaboration and develop uniform practices, according to a letter from the Floyd County judges.
Farris said they will have one budget, but after meeting with the division chiefs, she does not expect any major changes in how the department operates. Gary Collins will remain division chief of adult probation, Rick Applegate division chief of Superior Court No. 2 (misdemeanor) probation, and Chris Rowe division chief of juvenile probation.
Farris was unanimously selected by Floyd County’s judicial officers to oversee the unified department.
She became the county’s first female probation officer in 1981 and the county’s first female court bailiff in 1991. She was appointed as adult probation officer in 1999 and has a caseload of more than 300 adult felony cases.
