JEFFERSONVILLE —
Ed Totten says he has had to rely on a good product and word of mouth spreading since he opened his business in Jeffersonville last month.
But, he said, “business is rolling beyond my expectations at this point.”
Totten is the ET in ET’s Memphis Bar-B-Q, which opened at 201 Spring St. in March.
“We’re smoking up the best meat on either side of the river,” said ET, a partner and pitmaster at the new spot.
The restaurant prides itself on the fact that all its meats are slow-cooked on the large smokers behind the building.
Boston butts, for instance, can take between 12 and 16 hours to finish.
Ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, barbecue spaghetti and pulled turkey are among items on the menu. The business also does large family orders and it delivers. Those interested in delivery can call 812-283-9000.
MORE BUSINESS NEWS
• ET’s is not the only new barbecue place in town, however. Further north, people have found their way to Harley’s Hardwoodz Bar BQ, at 1703 C Charlestown-New Albany Pike.
Owner Frank Harley said in the two weeks that the eatery has been open, regulars are already developing.
“[We’re] starting to get a lot of people returning,” he said, noting that many workers from surrounding businesses are making it a lunchtime stop.
“They’re telling me they like it.”
The restaurant offers barbecue pork, chicken and brisket dishes, all of which are smoked and marinated in Harley’s own barbecue sauce. He also recommends the chicken smoked white chili.
“I found my calling, which is barbecue,” he said. “Now I get to do what I love.”
• Across town, at 1725 East 10th St., business partners Leo Lopez and Nairobi Aparcedo just opened Cuba Libre. The restaurant offers traditional Cuban food prepared by a Cuban chef.
Though it’s only been open a few days now, Lopez said the new place has had some business so far.
Asked about favorite dishes, they recommend the Cuban sandwich, which consist of roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard on pressed Cuban bread. They also point out the pernil de puerco asado — slow roasted pork marinated in citrus juices, garlic and Cuban spices.
Nearly everything on the menu is less than $8, including with sides, Lopez pointed out. The only item more than that is grilled top sirloin, and it’s $9.99.
Lopez and Aparcedo are Jeffersonville residents. They said they wanted to open a restaurant in Jeffersonville because they didn’t know of any Cuban restaurants on this side of the Ohio River.
A few more-established businesses have made some moves lately.
• Grinny Possum Fiber Art, retailer of fine yarns, fibers and sewing supplies, moved to 326 Spring St. on April 1. The move takes it only a block or so up from its previous location to a larger space, said co-owner Ann Merriman.
• Additionally, Core Wellness Institute LLC — a natural pain relief and therapeutic lifestyle clinic — has moved from its Spring Street location to the Nolan Center, 131 E. Court Ave., Suite 100, in Warder Park.
The main reason for the move is that the business wanted to focus more on education, treatment and training programs for natural pain relief and prevention, said Rebecca Hoffman, whose husband, Dr. Steven Hoffman, owns the clinic. The space allows them to offer more class on topics such as healthy lifestyle changes, she said.
